Ms Evie Mertens

Urology Nurse Practitioner, RN, BN, MNursPrac(NursPrac)

Evie Mertens is a Urology Nurse Practitioner working in both public and private practice. Evie has been specialising in Urology Nursing since 2012 at the Royal Melbourne Hospital. Prostate Cancer has been her main focus of post graduate study; completing a urology and continence diploma at Latrobe University, a Masters in Nurse Practitioner (Urology) at Flinders University, and an Intimacy and Couples with Prostate Cancer course through Dalhousie University. She implemented the first Australian Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) program for patients undergoing radical cystectomy (bladder removal) aiming to improve patient outcomes at the Royal Melbourne Hospital in 2016.   She has been involved in several urology trials and is currently facilitating research focused on penile rehabilitation and treatment adherence. 

She works as Nurse Practitioner at a large regional health service in uro oncology with an expanded scope of practice, training in bladder cancer surveillance and haematuria diagnostic flexible cystoscopy, and is currently  learning to perform transperineal prostate biopsy. She consults in a uro oncology clinic facilitating patient assessment, procedures, and follow up for bladder, renal and prostate cancer patients. 

She is a past committee member of the Victorian Urology Nursing Society (VUNS) and the Australian New Zealand Urology Nursing Society (ANZUNS), is a member of the Society of Australian sexologists (SAS) and ANZUNS, has presented at several conferences on prostate cancer and sexual dysfunction, won departmental excellence in nursing awards, a Jane Bell Scholarship and is a co-convener of the nursing and allied health program for the Asia Pacific Prostate Cancer Conference; providing education to nurses and allied health globally. She is committed to a multidisciplinary approach to patient care, linking in physiotherapists, exercise physiologists, peer support and psychologists when necessary to optimise care.

At Western Urology Evie can assist patients and partners with sexual side effects experienced from prostate cancer treatment, sexual dysfunction, elevated PSA surveillance, lower urinary tract symptoms, watchful waiting,  and androgen deprivation therapy management. She can provide pre-operative education and post-operative support and follow-up for urology oncology patients and those undergoing prosthetic procedures to manage the side effects of prostate cancer treatment.
